Seminars led by senior faculty members from the Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI) are designed to introduce LGP 2024 students to frontiers of mathematical knowledge and applied mathematics. With a primary focus on exploring the practical applications of mathematics, the CMI seminars aim to showcase how mathematics aids countries, organizations, and individuals in solving real world problems. The seminars promote the interdisciplinary nature of mathematical applications across fields such as data science, computation, probability and statistics, and will expose students to the fundamentals of mathematical thinking.

Number Theory: Number theory is considered the Queen of sciences and is well known to be attractive to precocious young minds. The problems in elementary number theory are easy to state, but may be very difficult to prove. They are at the heart of many areas of mathematics. In this course, we learn the fundamental divisibility properties of numbers and learn essential proof techniques such as induction and the well-ordering principle.
Geometry: Geometry is the bedrock of mathematical thinking. In this course, we systematically study the axioms, theorems and proofs of Euclidean geometry. Emphasis will be on learning how to write proofs and to make clear logical arguments.

Assistant Professor, Indraprashtha Insitute of Information Technology, DelhiCombinatorics: Combinatorics is an area of mathematics which is well known for being accessible, with wide applicability in computer science, probability theory, physics and other parts of mathematics. It is distinguished by clever problem solving, and problems that may be stated easily but are tough to do. There are a vast number of interesting combinatorial objects, including tilings, permutations, subsets, graphs, partitions, set partitions. We will study a selection using techniques which involve recurrence relations, finding and proving patterns, and solve various combinatorial problems.
Experimental Mathematics: In this course we learn the essentials of programming, mathematical experimentation and visualisation tools in mathematics. The tools used are sagemath (a symbolic algebra package) and Desmos (a graphing calculator, and geometry visualisation package). Sage includes python, which is the programming language we will use for programming tasks. The course provides suitable background for science students who wish to learn modern skills in using mathematics and computation to experiment and visualise mathematics.
Problem Solving Seminars: The objective of this intense course is to learn how to solve math problems. The course will be run by an experienced problem solving coach who has worked with India's math olympiad teams. This is only available for selected students, who do extremely well in our entrance, and who additionally pass an interview with the faculty.
