The workshops aim to explore the many intersections of science with gender and sexuality. We use the space of the workshops to foster critical thinking, challenge established norms, and encourage participants to re-evaluate the role of science in shaping our understanding of society. In a world that is hinged on objective and logical modes of knowledge, what is the role of emotions and subjectivity? Is gender studies a scientific discipline? Further, the sessions also investigate the relationship between science and sexuality, examining how sexuality is incorporated into scientific pedagogy. We learn to build a vocabulary of sexuality that challenges binary perspectives and encourages nuanced discussions about its complexity.
Additionally, these workshops will impart knowledge of how dominant structures use the discourse of science to justify unethical practices. We will try to probe the origin of the story of a caste-based society built on the premise of caste being natural. Lastly, we will look for synergies between science and social sciences in shaping our understanding of the world. The workshops aim to imagine ways in which STEM and society are not divorced from each other but rather, work together to think about deeper issues of infrastructure, education, and technology, keeping gender and sexuality as our lens for inquiry. We will do this through an inquiry into popular media on TV shows and movies like The Big Bang Theory, Dexter’s Laboratory, 3 Idiots, and portrayals of gender in memes and film, to delve into critical faculties while also having fun and interacting with new forms of knowledge.
